You and I may not feel it, but we are all at the beginning of the Information Age. Like a double edged sword, the advantages and disadvantages of Information and Communications Technology are clear. If someone says to me again, “Dr. Nuccitelli, what do you want us to do, turn off the internet?”, I think I will throw my digital devices out the window. For the record, I love cyberspace and grateful for its many benefits. What I don’t understand is how little is being done to teach children and the rest of society about the dark side of cyberspace and the typologies of iPredator.

At times, it feels like society has buried its head in the sand in relationship to internet safety and cyber attack prevention. It is truly unfortunate that the vast majority of online users do not pay attention to information security and cyber attack prevention until they, their loved ones or wallet are cyber attacked. Not only do I think basic internet safety, Digital Citizenship and how to conduct oneself in cyberspace be taught in schools, but it should be a national priority. For now, the best we can do, for those of us who give a damn, is to encourage awareness.

To achieve this aim, pasted below are twenty images and quotes to help think about how to protect yourself, loved ones and business. All the images are free to download, share and edit for educational purposes. For most devices, simply right click on the image and click “save as” to download to your device. No personal information or email address is required to print out or save. I present you my novice graphic design skills and philosophical ramblings.

Dark Psychology: Dark Psychology is the study of the human condition as it relates to the psychological nature of people to prey upon other people motivated by criminal and/or deviant drives that lack purpose and general assumptions of instinctual drives and social sciences theory. All of humanity has the potentiality to victimize humans and other living creatures. While many restrain or sublimate this tendency, some act upon these impulses. Dark Psychology seeks to understand those thoughts, feelings, perceptions and subjective processing systems that lead to predatory behavior that is antithetical to contemporary understandings of human behavior. Dark Psychology assumes that criminal, deviant and abusive behaviors are purposive and have some rational, goal-oriented motivation 99% of the time. It is the remaining 1%, Dark Psychology parts from Teleology.

Dark Psychology encompasses all that makes us who we are in relationship to our dark side. All cultures, faiths and humanity have this proverbial cancer. From the moment we are born to the time of death, there is a side hidden within us that some have called “Evil” and others have defined as criminal, deviant or psychopathic. Dark Psychology posits there are people who commit these same acts and do so not for power, money, sex, retribution or any other known purpose. They commit horrid acts without a goal. Simplified, their ends do not justify their means. There are people who violate and injure others for the sake of doing so. Within in all of us is this potential. A potential to harm others without cause, explanation, or purpose is the area explored. Dark Psychology assumes this dark potential is incredibly complex and even more difficult to define.

iPredator

iPredator: A person, group or nation who, directly or indirectly, engages in exploitation, victimization, coercion, stalking, theft or disparagement of others using Information and Communications Technology [ICT]. iPredators are driven by deviant fantasies, desires for power and control, retribution, religious fanaticism, political reprisal, psychiatric illness, perceptual distortions, peer acceptance or personal and financial gain. iPredators can be any age or gender and are not bound by economic status, race, religion or national heritage. iPredator is a global term used to distinguish anyone who engages in criminal, coercive, deviant or abusive behaviors using ICT. Central to the construct is the premise that Information Age criminals, deviants and the violently disturbed are psychopathological classifications new to humanity.

Whether the offender is a cyberbully, cyberstalker, cyber harasser, internet troll, cybercriminal, online sexual predator, cyber terrorist, online child pornography consumer/distributor, online psychopath or engaged in internet defamation or nefarious cyber deception, they fall within the scope of iPredator. The three criteria used to define an iPredator include:

  1. A self-awareness of causing harm to others, directly or indirectly, using ICT.
  2. The usages of ICT to obtain, exchange, deliver and tamper with harmful information.
  3. A general understanding of Cyberstealth used to engage in criminal or deviant activities or to profile, identify, locate, stalk and engage a target.

Unlike human predators prior to the Information Age, iPredators rely on the multitude of benefits offered by Information and Communications Technology [ICT]. These assistances include exchange of information over long distances, rapidity of information exchanged and the seemingly infinite access to data available. Malevolent in intent, iPredators rely on their capacity to deceive others using ICT in the abstract and artificial electronic universe known as cyberspace. Therefore, as the internet naturally offers all ICT users anonymity, if they decide, iPredators actively design online profiles and diversionary tactics to remain undetected and untraceable.

Cyberstealth, a sub-tenet of iPredator, is a covert method by which iPredators attempt to establish and sustain complete anonymity while they engage in ICT activities planning their next assault, investigating innovative surveillance technologies or researching the social profiles of their next target. Concurrent with the concept of Cyberstealth is iPredator Victim Intuition [IVI]. An iPredator’s IVI is their aptitude to sense a target’s ODDOR [Offline Distress Dictates Online Response], online & offline vulnerabilities, psychological weaknesses, technological limitations, increasing their success of a cyber-attack with minimal ramifications.

Cyberstealth: Online Deception & Identity Cloaking Concept

online-deception-identity-cloaking-construct-cyberstealth-internet-safety-ipredator-image

CYBERSTEALTH

Cyberstealth: Cyberstealth is a concept formulated along with iPredator and is a term used to define a method and/or strategy by which iPredators use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) , if they so choose, to establish and sustain complete anonymity while they troll and stalk a target. Cyberstealth is a methodology entrenched in Information Age Deception or also called online deception. Given the Internet inherently affords everyone anonymity, Cyberstealth used by iPredators range from negligible to highly complex and multi-faceted. The rationale for using “stealth” in the suffix of this term, serves to remind ICT users the primary intent fueling iPredators. This intent is to hide their identity by designing false online profiles, identities, covert tactics and methods to ensure their identities remain concealed reducing their probability of identification, apprehension and punishment.

Unlike classic deception used by traditional criminals and deviants, Online Deception completely relies on the anonymity and “veil of invisibility” available to all ICT users. The primary difference between Information Age Deception and Cyberstealth are the activities iPredators and ICT users engage in. In this writer’s construct, Cyberstealth is reserved for iPredators who actively plan a strategy that have criminal, deviant and harmful implications to targeted victims. Information Age Deception includes all forms of Cyberstealth, but also includes deceptive practices that do not have elements of crime, defiance or harm against others.

“Whether used to influence the masses or in cyberspace to persuade others into divulging confidential or sensitive information, social engineering requires psychological manipulation to control a person, group or nation. In the Information Age, children can be just as effective at social engineering as adults and cause driven groups.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. (2014)

iPredator

iPredator:A person, group or nation who, directly or indirectly, engages in exploitation, victimization, coercion, stalking, theft or disparagement of others using Information and Communications Technology [ICT]. iPredators are driven by deviant fantasies, desires for power and control, retribution, religious fanaticism, political reprisal, psychiatric illness, perceptual distortions, peer acceptance or personal and financial gain. iPredators can be any age or gender and are not bound by economic status, race, religion or national heritage. iPredator is a global term used to distinguish anyone who engages in criminal, coercive, deviant or abusive behaviors using ICT. Central to the construct is the premise that Information Age criminals, deviants and the violently disturbed are psychopathological classifications new to humanity.

Whether the offender is a cyberbully, cyberstalker, cyber harasser, internet troll, cybercriminal, online sexual predator, cyber terrorist, online child pornography consumer/distributor or engaged in internet defamation or nefarious cyber deception, they fall within the scope of iPredator. The three criteria used to define an iPredator include:

I. A self-awareness of causing harm to others, directly or indirectly, using ICT.
II. The usage of ICT to obtain, tamper with, exchange and deliver harmful information.
III.

Online Deception

iPredator Bridge:  iPredator Bridge is a theoretical tenet of iPredator representing the psychological, perceptual & behavioral trajectory of people who use Information and Communications Technology [ICT] to harm others motivate by self-righteousness, moral turpitude, religious/political/philosophical convictions and pro-social perceptual distortions. Not initially driven by criminal, malevolent or deviant endeavors,

iPredator Bridge seeks to define why some people approach the nefarious and malevolent realm of iPredator, decide to proceed, and then continue along a trajectory where their cognitive, affective, behavioral and perceptual actions harm others or societies. Similar to the iPredator, they are motivated by personal convictions, greed, power, control, narcissism or psychopathology. Different from the iPredator, they have yet to engage in criminal/deviant activities using ICT or use complex perceptual distortions to validate the harm they cause. iPredator Bridge investigates why some people draw near to this realm and either proceed in their maladaptive trajectory or cease and desist.

Hidden in cyberspace, and through ICT, they contemplate the benefits and detriments, proceed, and then continue a path where their cognitive and perceptual processes are focused upon directly or indirectly harming others. For those who cross this proverbial bridge, they enter a world where their choices are increasingly governed by criminal, deviant, immoral and maladaptive processes.

Although it is assumed all humanity, has residing deep in their psyche, the potential & Dark Psychology for behaving in harmful and malevolent ways they rarely or never activate, ICT and cyberspace offers a direct connection and psychological route to the dark side. Just as ICT and cyberspace is incredibly pro-social and beneficial to humanity, these same technological advancements can lead humanity to diabolical and sinister endeavors. iPredator Bridge is a symbolic representation of the approach, route and initial crossing into the realm of the iPredator. In a rudimentary and abstract way, it is posited that cyberspace, ICT and all future technological advancements, related to information technology, is an extension of the mind and the instinctual drives of the collective brain to replicate itself outside a human organism. Related to this postulate are the theoretical tenets of Carl Jung [1875-1961] and his construct of the Collective Unconscious.

“The Information Age technocentric concept of being “connected” is actually a paradox of disconnection causing us to lose our instinctual drives for social cohesion, allegiance and selflessness. As our dependency upon Information and Communications Technology [ICT] grows, spreading throughout our collective human consciousness, the less we care for our neighbors and the more we delude ourselves into thinking that online connections are far more valuable than realty based relationships.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. Dark Psychology: Dark Psychology is the study of the human condition as it relates to the psychological nature of  humanity to prey upon others motivated by criminal and/or deviant drives that seemingly lack purpose and general assumptions of instinctual drives or social science theory. All of humanity has this potential to victimize others and living creatures. While many restrain or sublimate this tendency, some act upon these impulses. Dark Psychology seeks to understand those thoughts, feelings, actions and subjective processing systems that lead to predatory behavior that is antithetical to understanding human behavior.

Dark Psychology assumes that criminal, deviant and abusive behaviors are purposive and have some rational, goal- oriented motivation 99% of the time. It is the remaining 1%, Dark Psychology parts from Adlerian theory, Phenomenology and Teleological Approach. Dark Psychology postulates there is a region within the human psyche that enables some people to commit atrocious acts without purpose. In this theory, it is called the Dark Singularity.

Dark Psychology posits that all humanity has a reservoir of malevolent intent ranging from minimally obtrusive and fleeting thoughts to pure psychopathic deviant behaviors without a cohesive rationality. This is called the Dark Continuum. Mitigating factors acting as accelerants and/or attractants to approaching the Dark Singularity, and where a person’s heinous actions fall on the Dark Continuum, is what Dark Psychology calls Dark Factor. Dark Psychology encompasses all that makes us who we are in relationship to our dark side.

All cultures, all faiths and all humanity have this proverbial cancer. From the moment we are born to the time of death, there is a chasm lurking within us that some have called evil and others have defined as criminal, deviant, and pathological. Dark Psychology introduces a third philosophical construct, pristine evil, which views human behavior different from religious dogmas and contemporary social science theories.

Having been a practicing psychologist and forensic examiner before changing his career path to the study and investigation of online users who engage in malevolent and nefarious activities, Dr. Nuccitelli fully understands that most sexual predators are typically close in age to the child victim and usually family members, friends or intimate partners of their victims. In essence, online sexual predators are from all walks of life and not bound by race, religion, heritage or socio-economic status.

Dr. Nuccitelli has stated, “I don’t think society at large truly understands the widespread growth of child pornography and online sexual predators trolling for child targets in cyberspace.”

Simply stated, Online Predators are sexual predators who use Information and Communications Technology and the Internet to locate, target and victimize minors. Common forums they use to target children include chat rooms, instant messaging or social networking sites for the purpose of flirting with and meeting others for illicit sexual experiences. Online Predators often are motivated to manipulate or “groom” a minor with the ultimate goal of meeting and engaging in sexual activity, despite knowing they are engaging in illegal activities.

In instances where meeting their victims is not the primary objective, Online Predators also attempt to persuade children and teens to participate in some form of online sexual and/or sexually provocative activity motivated by sexual deviance or for financial gain engaging in the distribution and sale of online child pornography. A brief description of iPredator that includes the typology of Online Predator is as follows:

an-online predator-and-internet-predator-prevention-tips-dark-psychology-dr-internet-safety-ipredator-blog-post-image

iPredator

iPredator: A person, group or nation who, directly or indirectly, engages in exploitation, victimization, coercion, stalking, theft or disparagement of others using Information and Communications Technology [ICT]. iPredators are driven by deviant fantasies, desires for power and control, retribution, religious fanaticism, political reprisal, psychiatric illness, perceptual distortions, peer acceptance or personal and financial gain. iPredators can be any age or gender and are not bound by economic status, race, religion or national heritage. iPredator is a global term used to distinguish anyone who engages in criminal, coercive, deviant or abusive behaviors using ICT. Central to the construct is the premise that Information Age criminals, deviants and the violently disturbed are psychopathological classifications new to humanity.

Whether the offender is a cyberbully, cyberstalker, cyber harasser, internet troll, cybercriminal, online sexual predator, cyber terrorist, online child pornography consumer/distributor or engaged in internet defamation or nefarious online deception, they fall within the scope of iPredator. The three criteria used to define an iPredator include:

  • A self-awareness of causing harm to others, directly or indirectly, using ICT.
  • The usage of ICT to obtain, tamper with, exchange and deliver harmful information.
  • A general understanding of Cyberstealth used to engage in criminal or deviant activities or to profile, identify, locate, stalk and engage a target.

Unlike human predators prior to the Information Age, iPredators include the multitude of benefits offered by Information and Communications Technology [ICT].

“Although the benefits of Information and Communications Technology far outweigh the detriments for society, humanity has been seduced by the illusory notion that more technology translates into a better quality of life.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. [2014]

Dr. Internet Safety

Dr. Internet Safety: Dr. Internet Safety (aka, Doc iSafety) is an abstract pediatric internet safety character that educates tweens, teens and primary caregivers about cyberbullying, cyber harassment, cyberstalking, online sexual predation, cyber security, the dark side of cyberspace, internet addiction and developmentally appropriate iPredator concepts. Dr. Internet Safety is Developmental Psychology and adolescent maturation savvy in relationship to Information Age tweens and teens.

Dr. Internet Safety accepts and communicates to children supporting their perceptual distortion of viewing themselves as being more technology, social media and cyber safety skilled than their adult counterparts. From a societal standpoint, Dr. Internet Safety seeks to make all K-12 educational systems include internet safety classes compulsory for all American school districts. Furthermore, Dr. Internet Safety has graduate level experience in iPredator profiling, online deception, internet addiction and iPredator Inc.’s Information Age Education concept of humility, prevention education and non-denominational family values as being vital to children of the Information Age.

To help Dr. Internet Safety teach young children about internet safety, he relies upon the help from iPredator Inc.’s internet safety characters, Cyber Tyger and Troll Man. Created for young children, K-5, Dr. Internet Safety knows Troll Man vs. Cyber Tyger is an exceptional educational tool.

“Unlike traditional human predators prior to the Information Age, iPredators rely on the multitude of benefits offered by Information and Communications Technology. These assistances include exchange of information over long distances, rapidity of information exchanged and the seemingly infinite access to the data available.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. (2011)

Whereas iPredator involves criminal, deviant and harmful online activities, the Darkside of Cyberspace includes both legal and illegal activities, as well as, destructive and self-destructive behaviors. Dr. Nuccitelli has compiled the concepts he designed in his mission to create a framework termed, the Darkside of Cyberspace. As this writer continues to work on iPredator , iPredator Bridge [Dark Side of Cyberspace] and Dark Psychology [Hidden Realm of  Human Consciousness], the question of etiology and modus operandi related to evil remains elusive at best. Thousands of hours have been spent formulating these concepts with the next three-four decades to inevitably follow. It is no wonder why the fields of psychology, sociology, physiology and all religious dogmas have merely scratched the surface.

Researching ancient history, recent historical events, great philosophers, cosmology, quantum theory and religious interpretations; combined with this writer’s past clinical and forensic experiences, has led to his novice conclusions defining evil called iPredator, iPredator Bridge and Dark Psychology. Humanity is the apparent apex of all sentient beings on Earth and one would think the location, roots and mechanisms of nourishment for evil would be mapped and supported by global consensus. Immediately and always called to mind is if other apex creatures, inhabiting planets throughout the universe, experience this same conundrum.

Just as Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein and other notable theoretical physicists have attempted to connect the “very large” (aka, cosmology) with the “very small”  (aka, quantum mechanics), this writer posits that these same principles occur within humanity as a whole and within the human mind.

In relationship to history, it is of little human value, nor relevant to this writer’s pursuits, to castigate or pass judgment on if and how past atrocities occurred. If one does not subscribe to the accuracy of recorded history, then there are many other venues to consider. For example, if concluding that the Holocaust or similar historical mass genocides are nonsense and propaganda, then consider the American born profiles of Ted Bundy, Richard RamirezJeffrey Dahmer and other prolific serial murderers as starting points. Whether attempting to succinctly interpret the motivations of Heinrich Himmler or Luis Garavito, the reality is that there resides within all humans a reservoir (aka, unconscious) from which malevolent desires are born, fed and coddled. These desires are fueled by progressively obsessive fantasies and a deviant attraction for power, control and domination.

Then comes along the historical and societal paradigm shift known as the Information Age, whereby technology and all internet enabled connected digital devices create the abstract and artificial illusory environment called cyberspace. It is within cyberspace, that this writer’s concepts of iPredator, iPredator Bridge and Dark Psychology merge into a proverbial “soup.” This writer has attempted to map this cyber convergence he has called 5PV. The primary difference between 5PV and all other criminal, deviant and abuse victimization models, used in its design, is the environment in which the interplay between predator and victim exchange occurs. This environment, which benefits iPredator, is cyberspace.

For the first time in human civilization, the abyss known as evil can be observed and witnessed with minimal effort within cyberspace. Unfortunately, what one sees with his or her eyes is not what is always accurately interpreted and imprinted within the unconscious. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the internet are brilliant designs of human invention. Cyberspace, the artificial environment accessed via electronic devices, is a remarkable engineering feat that has, and will continue to do so, change the very fabric of human consciousness and what it means to be community centric.

As an academic and philosophical disciple of Carl Jung, Alfred Adler, Robert Hare, Philip Zimbardo and Stanton Samenow, this writer seeks to rely upon their visions to one day define why cyberspace is causing a cultural disconnectedness. Unknown at present, cyberspace has built within its structure a method for circumventing a person’s capacity to practice humility, charity, self-preservation and mutual respect for others. What this writer calls the “veil of anonymity” within cyberspace,  a new perceptual dimension has been created. Cyberspace is an artificial world that can accelerate a person’s unconscious desire to engage in criminal, deviant and immoral acts, even if it is not part of their genetic or environmental heritage.

This proverbial “digital depravity factor”  has already reared its ugly head evidenced by the rapid growth of cyberbullying, cyberstalking, online sexual predation, cybercrime and various other forms of online aggression and victimization. The explosion of online deception alone should cause communities to mobilize fearing an attack. The only iPredator typology not having come to fruition to date is cyber terrorism. Only time will tell if a major cyber terrorist event will target American soil within the next century. If humanity does not mobilize to implement a strategy stopping the societal disconnectedness this writer posits as growing, an optimal environment for cybercrime, online aggression and victimization are the inevitable outcomes.

“The desire to terminate life fuels the actions necessary to quench that desire’s thirst. The question remaining unanswered is from where does this desire hail and how did it get there, within the human mind, in the first place.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. (2006)
